Pampered sector feeling pressure on margins:
Consulting firms increasingly demand sector-specific complete solutions
While well-organized processes and seamless ERP support are usually standard for industrial manufacturers and wholesalers, the consulting and services sector is still lagging behind considerably when it comes to the efficient automation of its business operations. Amazingly enough, this is also often the case for prominent larger agencies, engineering companies and IT consulting firms. It is evident that up until now, software providers have not responded effectively to this market. As a new provider, the web-ready “ERP for Service Providers” from Actricity is now addressing the needs of the sector with an integrated approach.
To meet this need, the “ERP for Service Providers” from Actricity was purposefully geared toward complex development and project business and typical support and hotline processes of the industry. The open-source-based system offers an integrated, transparent flow of information that encompasses all divisions, such as customer management, sales planning, quotation and preliminary costing, project management, invoicing, cost calculations and controlling. Contract and/or licensing management are also part of a standard system. Only administrative accounting is not offered as an integral part of the standard system.
Isolated software islands, media disruptions, and Excel all on the day’s agenda
Martin Bühler knows that this type of extensive integration is in sharp contrast to the normal daily routines of those in the target group – which includes engineering firms, software providers and IT service providers. “Most consulting firms and service providers work with four or five different software islands. This increases the manual effort required. Normally, project management and collaboration tools are utilised, as well as invoicing software and a connected CRM system. Otherwise, you just use Excel.” Even companies with over a hundred employees are no exception.
Pampered sector increasingly under margin pressure
Recently, however, the consulting branch has been experiencing significantly increased margin pressure. Although this has been the norm in industry for quite some time and is an incentive to continually improve efficiency and create new business processes, the consulting firms – accustomed as they were to success – are only gradually accepting the new conditions. “Previously, they didn’t know what to do with all the money coming in,” Bühler continues. Yet since many contracts were cancelled during the financial crisis, an increasing number of CEOs want or need to know exactly how much turnover they are generating, for example, or the total value of their invoices. “As a result, they are more interested in finding suitable software tools.”
